Time Magazine: Top 10 Tech Failures

FailureTime Magazine recently broke a story reporting on what they believe to be the Top 10 Biggest Tech Failures of the past decada. Crappy Microsoft makes the list twice with two separate products. As if we didn’t already know Microsoft was crap, Time Magazine rubs it in their face and reminds consumers even more.

Here’s the complete list:

1. Microsoft Vista

2. Gateway Computers

3. HD DVD

4. Vonage Phone Service

5. Youtube

6. Sirius XM Satellite Radio

7. Microsoft Zune

8. Palm

9. Iridium

10. Segway

I’ve gotta say, I think this is the most incredible and accurate top ten list of dismel tech failures of the past 10 years. Should there be more added?

Beware! FBI is Social Networking Now and They Dissed Myspace

FBI FacebookThe FBI is social networking now. Isn’t this like an invasion of privacy? Doesn’t the government interfere in our lives enough as is? Do they really need a Facebook account. Especially since that dreaded Patriot Act that strips our civil liberties away.

In addition to Facebook, they’ve also created an official Twitter and Youtube account. They didn’t however create a Myspace account. I now that Myspace is practically a fledgling company now and they are struggling to keep a float abreast their competitors.

Talk about a blow to confidence.

As of now, the FBI says they’re creating widgets and apps for social networking sites, but to me it just seems kinda fishy.

Digg’s Lead Architect Quits

DiggDigg’s lead architect Joe Stump recently left the social networking giant known as Digg to do his own thing. He’s teaming up with Social Thing creator Matt Galligan. Can you really blame him! Digg is getting bought out by Google and when that happens, he’ll probably lose his job.

Digg is another example of  site that can’t figure out how to make money but yet they keep getting venture capital money thrown at them. It is utterly disgusting! Why do we reward failed progress in America?!?!

Keep Oldies Off Facebook

FacebookI’m on Facebook like most young people are, but recently I’ve been thinking about cancelling my account. Facebook is being taken over by moms, dads, and grandparents. Am I the only one that sees this? Am I the only one that has a problem with this?

Maybe I’m just a jerk, but it’s really freaking annoying. Why doesn’t someone just create a community for old people, so they can stay the hell off of Facebook.

It is absolutely annoying when you get friend requests from parents and family. It is soooooo creepy. It’s like DAMN! Get a life and go f**k your wife!

This recent frustration is really tempting me to cancel my account.

A Cat Gets Half A Million Twitter Followers

Sockington Cat

Sockington The Cat is a rising celebrity. He’s a cat that has half a million followers on Twitter. Now maybe I’m just cynical, but I hate Twitter to begin with. It’s a stupid website that’s gained millions in venture capital funding and yet they can’t even figure out how to make money.

Nonetheless, this situation makes me hate Twitter even further. A cat with HALF A MILLION followers! That is rediculous!

Every since the celebrity nuts started endorsing Twitter, it seems like everybody has a Twitter account now. Even animals. This is rediculous. And when you read the tweets it’s even more rediculous. Like this one:

“watching cat tv in living room OH BOY SQUIRREL RUNS ACROSS ROAD SHOW this is either going to be comedy or horror HOORAY IT’S COMEDY.”

Please, lets put an end to this crap and stop all of this rediculous social networking crap! Cats on Twitter!!! Am I the only that thinks this is weird?

Sopcast | Dangerous Scam

SopcastSopcast is an internet tv capable program that allows you to watch tv shows and movies by getting them through a peer to peer network. Sopcast is garbage and here’s the reasons why:

Unsafe:

Remember Limewire? Maybe you still use it. If so, delete it IMMEDITELY! It is a virus mecca! Nonetheless, Limewire like the original Napster allows users to download free music, movies, pictures, and anything audio and/or visual. However, since you’re downloading media that has been downloaded by others, you never know the source of the media and rather or not it is infected. Do you really trust downloading something from a stranger?

If you use Limewire I’m sure you’ve had the unfortunate experience of downloading a song or media file and then it being something else, like porn, the wrong song, a really low-quality version, or otherwise useless junk. Of course we know that you get what you pay for and Limewire is free. However free is not always best. Especially if your computer becomes vulnerable to attacks by downloading media that you are unaware of being a virus.

This is the same problem with Sopcast. The only difference between Limewire and Sopcast is that Limewire is music-driven and Sopcast is TV and Movie-driven, so there’s more of an emphasis of users downloading and sharing TV Shows and Movies.

I’m not the only person to have had this problem. Listen to what another user had to say about Sopcast:

The latest version 3.0 have Trojan.Win32.Agent.ixj as detect by Kaspersky 7

– Softpedia.com –

Unreliable:

Although Sopcast touts themselves as internet tv, it’s not really internet tv. Internet tv would require you to have the capabilites of watching tv on the internet the same way you do on a tv; meaning you should be able to go to channels you want. Sopcast does not allow or have this feature because they rely on others to download tv shows and movies first.

I can not stress enough!!! DO NOT DOWNLOAD SOPCAST! Unless for some strange reason, you enjoy viruses, trojan horses, adware, and spyware.

Although Sopcast is a scam, getting cable and satellite quality tv is possible and available. I use a service called Satellite TV for PC. It allows you to watch over 3000 national and international tv, movie, and music channels.

I personally am not into watching tv on my computer, so I hooked up my laptop to my tv using an hdmi cable, and the resolution is flawless.

Internet Download Manager | Alert

Internet Download ManagerInternet Download Manager is an application that allows you to increase the speed of your downloads. In addition they also have other features that allow you to download flash videos from sites like Youtube and other video sharing sites.

I’m not a fan of Internet Download Manager. After installing and using it on my computer, it became non-responsive and gave errors after a few months of use. The flash video downloading application also eventually faded out and stopped working all together.

Besides Internet Download Manager simply not working after two months of use, I don’t trust the recommendations it has been awarded by software review services. These services are paid to write positive and biased reviews. If you find any software on Download.com, you will notice that 9 out of 10 times it has a rating of 3 1/2 out of 5 stars everytime. It think it is impossible for them to like, enjoy, and approve 90% of software titles they review.

I think these review sites are one of the biggest scams.

If you check the consumer reviews of Internet Download Manager and others, once you scroll down and see the negative reviews you’ll get an idea of what is really going on. Now I’m well aware that some people just can’t be satisfied.

Here’s a very compelling review about Internet Download Manager from an actual user:

“Please DO NOT install this software unless you are going to purchase and use it forever!

I downloaded it when I was in a hurry and wanted to download a 3GB file.

WHAT a BLUNDER!

I removed Internet Download Manager the next day completely and then the IDM virus started it’s havoc. It would abruptly give 20-30 pop ups of IDM CC extension. I did not download any files multiple times then why these multiple pop ups? And why at all should I be bothered when I removed IDM?

This is malware that punishes users for not giving them their credit card”

– Softpedia.com –

The problem the user mentioned above is the same problem I encountered with Internet Download Manager as well as several other free trial programs from download.com. If you use the trial and don’t buy, they will infect your computer with spyware and adware. They get paid from this.

I assume their mission is to get paid “by any means necessary.”

When I downloaded Internet Download Manager, I got a pop up stating that their was an intrusion attempt to turn off my firewall. This is nothing to play around with. Do not download this junk!

Despite Internet Download Manager being a scam, spyware and adware free-for-all, there are legitimate download managers and download accelerators that really do work and do not install this junk on your computer.

I use and highly recommend Download Accelerator Pro. I’ve tested it with several spyware, adware, and virus programs and everything came back clean. Download Accelerator Pro is also endorsed by worldwide organizations such as The World Economic Forum, Business Week, and The Singapore Government.

These are credentials and recommendations by top organizations who do not put their stamp of approval on B.S. They also don’t accept paid reviews like Download.com.

FlashGet | Caution

FlashGetFlashGet is a download acceleration tool published by an Asian software manaufacturer. To keep it simple… FlashGet is no good.

FlashGet allows you to accelerate your download speed. It also has a few other neat features. In addition it’s free.

With those benefits and features you’d think it’s great right? Wrong!

No matter how feature-rich a software application is, it does no good if it puts spyware and adware on your computer. This is a common problem with software being released from Southeast Asia. I do want to be clear however that most software produced from this region of the world is great, however FlashGet is absolutely no good.

It has become very common for software publishers to release free software or “freeware” as it’s called amongst techies, and then insert spyware and adware onto your computer. Without getting too much in depth about this process and why they do this, you should at least know and realize as the old saying goes “there’s nothing free in life.”

No matter what, if you get something free there’s often times a cost in the end. And the cost of a damaged pc and spyware is not worth it.

Here’s what some people are saying about FlashGet:

“Showed up in Spywarebot as a bad registry key. It was deleted by Spywarebot as an infection.”

– Download.com –

“Overly complicated.”

– Download.com –

“Security Threat: SPYWARE,MALWARE,SPYWARE,MALWARE”

– Download.com – Full Review

Although I beleive FlashGet to be a complete pile of junk, I do recommend another program called Download Accelerator Plus. It really works, it’s virus, spyware, and adware free. In addition, they’re getting tons of praise from organizations such as The World Economic Forum, Business Week Magazine, and The Singapore Government.

Download Accelerator Plus | It Works

Download Accelerator PlusDownload Accelerator Plus works! In fact it’s the only download optimizer that does work. There are several others out there such as Flash Get and Internet Download Manager.

As stated on their website, “Download Accelerator Plus (DAP) is the worlds most popular download accelerator, giving you the fastest possible download speeds, with privacy, security, and ease of use.”

Slow download speeds are perhaps the most annoying part about older computers. It’s a part of wear and tear as well as old age; and in this day and age a computer is considered old just after 6-12 months.

There are many things that make Download Accelerator Plus the best and the worlds most popular download accelerator. The reasons are as follows:

Patented Technology:

Many of the other download managers and download accelerators out there use pre-existing base software programs and then patch them together and re-sell a basic and previously released product. This is terrible. Not to mention a big rip off. Imagine buying a new car that turns out to be used. That’s essentially what these other software companies do.

Download Accelerator Plus has original patented technology. They were the originators and inventors of the market of download acceleration programs. All others are simply copies.

Easy Use:

This is what really separates Download Accelerator Plus from the other junk out there. After you’ve purchased Download Accelerator Plus, all you have to do is install the program and download files as usual. You will instantly notice the faster download speeds.

Recommendations:

Download Accelerator Plus is recommended and used by some top dogs. I’m not talking about big name websites or website owners. I’m talking about Governments and Leading Organizations.

The World Economic Forum had the following to say about Download Accelerator Plus:

– “Life-changing technology innovation and potential for long-term impact on business and society…”

WEF Technology Pioneer criteria

29 November 2007.

Full Review Here

The Singapore Government had the following to say about Download Accelerator Plus:

Singapore Gov. tests found that DAP increased High Speed internet download speed by up to four times.

August, 2008.

Full Review Here

Basic Features:

The basic features of Download Accelerator Plus are far beyond just basic. However, I say basic because there’s some premium features that are really heavy hitters.

– Inproved download speed

– Download security precautions

– Pause and resume of downloads

– Broadband optimization (helps you boost the speed specifically for high speed internet connections)

– File shredder

– Trace cleaner

– Privacy folders (password protected folders to keep files safe)

Premium Features:

The premium features could be separate pieces of software that they resell themselves. These two functions are being sold by third-party companies in excess of $30. Download Accelerator Plus gives you them for free and they’re actually stable and actually work.

– Web video downloader (download videos from the web; including sites like Youtube)

– Web video accelerator (allows you to watch videos on the web without having to wait for buffering. This was worth paying for DAP itself for me! I hate waiting for videos to load and buffer.

The Final Word:

Download Accelerator Plus is more than a download manager. It’s a full service suite of downloading tools. It increases your pc’s performance, downloading capabilities, and has excellent additional features. This is why it gets my seal of approval.

Registry Mechanic | Warning

Registry MechanicRegistry Mechanic is one of many registry cleaners on the market. I’m personally not a fan of it, although I’m aware that many people are. There’s many reasons why I as well as many other people do not like Registry Mechanic and in this blog post I will explain.

My top dislike of Registry Mechanic is it’s lack of features. There are many issues that need to be solved when dumping out your registry files. A clogged registry system can lead to sluggish computer behavior, slow download speeds, vulnerability to viruses, worms, and trojans, and it effects the overall processing speed of your computer.

Often times, people take their pc in for repair thinking it’s a virus and it’s more often a clogged registry system, but the pc repairman won’t tell you that. They’ll charge you $100 bucks for a diagnostic, a $100 bucks for “the latest and greatest” virus protector when all you really need is a $30 buck registry cleaner.

Anyways… Back to the original point… As I said above, Registry Mechanic really lacks features. The most disappointing thing is the lack of features it provides in the trial. The trial version only allows a limited amount of features to be accessed so you never get the full effect of the software. This is a bummer.

I realize for obvious reasons why a software company wouldn’t want you to test the whole software. As the saying goes, “why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free.”

In addition to my dislike of Registry Mechanic, it is important to note the numerous other disappointed users.

Here’s what other people are saying about Registry Mechanic:

“This Mechanic could be friendlier. The compacter was similarly crippled, and the defrag and system optimization buttons had no effect.”

– Editor: Cnet –

Actual customer reviews:

“Do not install. Not worth having.”

– Download.com –

This is another rip-off product that says it is free when it really is not. I am going into Add/Remove Programs and deleting the wicked thing off my PC.”

– Download.com –

Warning do not install! I installed on 32bit Vista now can’t use my PC.I purchased this since it looks like their marketing spin doctor’s have spent a ton on getting their information on various sites so it shows up in almost every search.

I installed this program then chose optimize my registry. It did this then forced me to restart. When it came back up it said installing updates and not to restart my computer it did this then restarted.

When it rebooted it came up and said the same thing and shutdown again. Now it is in this continuous loop of rebooting starting up and rebooting.

Stay away from this product whatever you do.

– Download.com –

My Registry Cleaner Recommendation:

Since Registry Mechanic is a complete dud, I checked out a few other registry cleaners that I like that also have great reviews by other users. My top registry cleaner recommendation is: Registry Fix.

Registry Fix does everything a strong and solid registry cleaner does. It’s highly rated and is award winning.

What really separates Registry Fix apart from other registry cleaners is its additional tools. Many registry cleaners like Registry Mechanic only clean your Windows registry files. However, it’s important to note that Registry Fix goes above and beyond the norm.

There’s a feature I really like which allows you to uninstall software. It’s a no-brainer that PC’s have a feature pre-installed that does this, but the problem is that the pre-installed uninstaller doesn’t completely wipe away software. There’s always bits and pieces left behind. This stuff gets placed in the Windows registry system and also disperses around your computer. As long as that stuff floats around, no matter what registry cleaner you use, it will never completely go away and this is what causes your computer to run slow.

Registry Fix completely gets rid of software not just bits and pieces. This also helps free up much needed speed on your hard drive which also helps your PC run faster.

Because of the additional tools, ease, and user-friendly interface, Registry Fix gets my top recommendation as the best registry cleaner available today. Registry cleaner also offers a free scan to show you whats infected on your computer prior to purchase. So before you buy, you can try.

Registry Cleaner also offers a full 60-day money back guarantee, so you have nothing to worry about. If it doesn’t work, they’ll give you a full refund.
